Touchqode – Free Code Editor For Smartphones

leave a comment

We all experience that typing in smartphones is not fun. It requires a serious effort (specially for touch screens).

However, it can be fun (or handy) to write code with them when we don't have the alternative (in a bus, metro station, etc.) as inspiration can come anytime.

Touchqode

Touchqode is an application for smartphones (currently Android-only, iOS to be launched) which enables you to view, edit and fix your source code anywhere.

It has the most extensive support for Java and also supports C++, C#, Python, Ruby, HTML, JavaScript and simple XML.

Would you use Touchqode or any other IDE for mobile?

Compatibility: Android (iOS is still under development)

Wink Toolkit – A JavaScript Framework For Building Mobile Web Applications

leave a comment

Wink Toolkit is a JavaScript framework for creating mobile web applications with less-hassle.

It comes in multiple parts where the "core" (which includes HTTP requests utilities, event management system or DOM extensions) is a must to use and every other feature is optional.

Such a structure helps keeping the filesize minimum which is pretty important when it is mobile.

Wink Toolkit

The UI widgets of the framework is very rich and consists of 3D wall, accordion, sliding panels, flip page, coverflow, progress bar and much more.

There are also libraries for a slick user experience with drag 'n' drop, gesture recognizer or browser history.

Wink Toolkit is a project of Dojo Foundation and also expected to be a part of the Dojo Mobile.

An Open Source Language For Building Mobile Web Apps – mobl

leave a comment

mobl is an open source language which aims to fasten the process of creating mobile web applications.

It has a JavaScript-like syntax which minimizes the learning curve and runs as a plugin under the free-to-use Eclipse IDE.

The language is statically-typed (JavaScript-like) which makes instant debugging of the entire application possible.

Mobl-Lang

mobl's compiler converts to code into HTML5, CSS +JavaScript and the output is compatible modern Webkit-based browsers, including iOS (iPhone, iPad), Android (2.0+), WebOS, Safari and Chrome.

It transparently handles database access by auto-creating the database schema and managing object persistence (no SQL is required).

P.S. There is also a command-line compiler that makes writing the code with any application.

Android Patterns – An Interaction Patterns Library For The Platform

leave a comment

As the popularity of Android rises and more applications are being built for the platform every day, the number of development-related questions increase as well.

Android Patterns is a website which aims to bring a solution to the design-related questions by sharing widely-accepted answers (patterns) for them.

Android Patterns

The patterns are demonstrated in a wireframe and provided with descriptions of when and when not to use them, the pros/cons and screenshot examples.

There are main categories like "Dealing With Data" or "Navigation" and many sub-categories (questions under each).

P.S. If you have patterns that you want to share with others, it is possible to submit them as well.

Mobile Boilerplate – A Base Template For Mobile Web Apps

leave a comment

Previously, WRD had shared HTML5 Boilerplate which was an HTML/CSS/JS template to be used as a starting point when building a HTML5 website.

The same team now presents Mobile Boilerplate which aims to be a base template when creating a mobile web application.

Mobile Boilerplate

It is not a framework and works well with popular frameworks like jQuery Mobile, Sencha Touch and others.

Rather, Mobile Boilerplate offers a ready-to-use offline caching setup, fast button clicks, a media query polyfill, and many common mobile WebKit optimizations.

The template works with all modern browsers and has fallback support for legacy Blackberry, Symbian and IE Mobile.

Tiny JavaScript Library For Creating Mobile Web Apps – XUI

leave a comment

XUI is a lightweight (probably the smallest – 4.1kb gzipped) JavaScript framework for building HTML5 mobile web applications.

It is not a feature-rich mobile framework that covers any possible scenario but can be enough for many applications considering mobile apps are usually about lists and forms.

XUI - Mobile JavaScripr Framework

The framework has a plain, familiar and chaining syntax + comes with targeted builds for WebKit, IE Mobile and BlackBerry.

Besides the base file (base.js) that includes the essentials  for dom node retrieval, it has 5 other .JS files for dom manipulation, events, animation, styling and Ajax support.

XUI is also modular and there are already few ready-to-use plugins.

P.S. It is built by the PhoneGap crew.

ChocolateChip-UI: A Mobile Web App Framework

leave a comment

ChocolateChip-UI is a mobile web app development framework that targets WebKit engines..

The framework provides fully functional widgets and controls right out of the box which know how to behave so you can focus only on providing the data.

ChocolateChip-UI

A new concept is introduced by the framework: WAML (Web App Markup Language) which is designed for creating mobile web apps and uses special tags + attributes to clearly define all the parts (rather than divs and spans) for a faster development.

ChocolateChip-UI has most of the elements we get used from iOS like the buttons, tab bar, lists, slider and more.

The framework is very well-documented, provides snippets for the basics and definitely a must-bookmark for mobile web app development.

Compatibility: WebKit Browsers

Create Digital Publications With HTML5 (And Convert To iOS Apps) – Laker

leave a comment

Laker is an open sourced set of files, styles and tips for designing digital publications in HTML5 and converting them into iOS apps.

The project is actually a part of the final thesis of Florian Franke who decided to improve the Baker Framework (like adding "table of contents" and iPhone support) and released the experience + files for free.

Laker HTML5 Publication Framework

It makes use of the Less Framework and can work in both iPhone or iPad in any orientation by resizing itself automatically.

Readers can swipe to change pages, double-tap to view the "table of contents" and use any media like sound, YouTube videos or images.

Simply, Laker can be used to build digital magazines, catalogues, slideshows, surveys and much more.
